Planning your leadership development
Before submitting an application for one of the Emergent Leadership courses you should consider how your leadership within the school might develop from your current role into future roles which will require further personal professional development. The National College for School Leadership provides a detailed Career Planning Tool which is built around three sections as described below. You should use the information that you obtain to discuss your professional development needs with your Principal and then consider which of the courses is most appropriate to your needs.
Wherever you are in your career, this tool will help you think about your current and future roles.
To get the most from the career planning tool, work through all three sections. First, build a profile of your current role. Then consider future roles - from which the tool generates an analysis of your development needs. Finally, use the development guide and learning styles section to put your career plans into practice.
You can also access the tool at any point and at various stages in your professional career.

First, use the self-assessment to create a profile of your current role and discover what development will be useful to you now.
Section 2: Where do I want to be?
Second, as you build a future leadership profile, discover the accountabilities, behaviours and challenges of stepping up into this role.
Section 3: How do I develop?
Third, access practical advice on the behaviours and learning styles which will help you develop more effectively throughout your career.
