Building Leadership Capacity

Thinkpieces and Toolkits

This website offers a number of 'thinkpieces' and 'toolkits' related to the various aspects of 'building leadership capacity' in the school and in the Northern Ireland system. They will be added to and developed in response to the needs of participants.

Initially twelve aspects of school leadership are shown as inter-related in building such capacity and can be accessed by clicking on the title shown on each piece of the jigsaw or through the sub-menus on the left of the screen. These descriptors of leadership are intended to provide convenient areas for further exploration but are not meant to be fully comprehensive.

Thinkpiece - A working definition of what is leadership capacity is given by Alma Harris and Linda Lambert at 'What is leadership capacity?' Do you agree with their propositions?

For each aspect of school leadership some introductory 'thinkpieces' like this are provided to set the context. For further exploration of how these might work in practice some 'toolkits' are provided.

For an example of a 'thinkpiece' see John West-Burnham p4 of 'Meeting the Challenge -Growing Tomorrow's School Leaders' and for the subseqent 'toolkit' see the sections that follow the six-step approach outlined by Frank Hartle.
